Andres Kanner

Andres M. Kanner, MD, FANA, FAAN, FAES, is professor of clinical neurology, head of the Epilepsy Section, and director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, which he joined on January 1, 2013. Prior to coming to Miami, he was director of the Laboratory of Electroencephalography and Video-EEG-Telemetry and associate director of the Epilepsy Section of the Rush Epilepsy Center. He was also professor of neurological sciences and psychiatry at Rush Medical College of Rush University in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Kanner was born in Mexico City, where he grew up and attended medical school at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. After graduating from medical school, he moved to the United States where he completed residency trainings in psychiatry and neurology, as well as a fellowship in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology. Dr. Kanner is quadruple-boarded in neurology, psychiatry, clinical neurophysiology, and epilepsy.

Dr. Kanner has long-standing research interests in the areas of pharmacology of epilepsy, psychiatric aspects of epilepsy, and surgical treatment of treatment-resistant focal epilepsy. He is the past editor-in-chief of Epilepsy Currents, the official journal of the American Epilepsy Society. He has served as co-chair of the Neuropsychobiology Commission of the International League Against Epilepsy and as chair of the Epilepsy Section of the American Academy of Neurology. He also has chaired and has been a member of several committees of the American Epilepsy Society and American Academy of Neurology.
